USA-Weinstein transferred from New York to California for trial

LOS ANGELES, July 20 (Reuters) – Former U.S. film producer Harvey Weinstein was transferred from New York to California on Tuesday to stand trial on charges of rape and sexual assault, a spokesperson for the ex-Hollywood mogul and the New York prison authority.

Harvey Weinstein, 69, was indicted last year by the Los Angeles prosecution on charges of rape and sexual assault against five women between 2004 and 2013.

The man who has produced Oscar-winning films like “The English Patient” or “Shakespeare in Love” was convicted of rape and sexual assault in a New York trial and sentenced in March 2020 imprisonment.

Harvey Weinstein denies having had non-consensual sex with anyone and has appealed his New York conviction. He considers that he was not entitled to a fair trial, denouncing the partiality of the jury.

Evoking multiple health problems, Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers had the virtue of preventing the transfer of their client to California.

“We are going to fight so that Harvey can receive the medical care he needs and, of course, that he is treated fairly. Due process, the presumption of innocence and a fair trial are always his rights,” he said. the spokesperson for the former producer, Juda Engelmayer, said in a statement.
