The United States struck a drone today that struck a car carrying suicide bombers from the Afghan branch of the Islamic State group, US officials said. An Afghan official said that three children were killed in the air strike, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there were explosives in the car and that secondary explosions erupted as a result of the impact.
According to them, the bombers planned to carry out an attack on the international airport in Kabul, where the evacuation continues before the deadline for the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, which expires on Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses, the blow was struck against two cars parked in a residential building near the airport, in which several civilians were killed and injured.
Authorities initially reported a separate rocket attack on a building near the airport, but it turned out to be the same event.
A woman named Dina Mohammadi said her relatives lived in the building and that several of them had died, including children.
A neighbor, posing as Ahmadudin, said he took the children’s bodies after the air strike, causing more explosions in the building.
The Taliban condemned the strike, saying the United States had violated Afghanistan’s sovereignty by “conducting an operation on foreign soil,” TASS reported, citing CNN.
