USA. Variety: Will Smith resigns from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Will Smith resigned from membership of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the “Variety” portal informs, citing the actor’s statement. The decision has to do with Smith’s behavior at the recent Academy Awards and the slap of comedian Chris Rock.

During the Oscars Will Smith came on stage and slapped Chris Rock in the facewho presented the nominees for the award. Later, in vulgar words, he shouted at him – it was a reaction to a joke in appearance Jady Pinkett Smiththe wife of Will Smith, who has been suffering from alopecia areata for many years.

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially condemned Smith’s behavior – on Wednesday night it announced that it was starting an investigation into the incident at the Oscars.

In a statement, Variery reports, Smith described his behavior as “shocking, painful and unforgivable” and said he was “resigning from membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences” and would accept any additional consequences the Academy board deems appropriate.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all present and the world’s audience,” said Smith. “I have betrayed the Academy’s trust. I have deprived the other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be honored for their extraordinary work. I am devastated,” he added.
