USA-Unexpected increase in jobless claims to 362,000

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (Reuters) – Unemployment claims rose in the United States during the week to September 25, to 362,000 from 351,000 the week before, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Economists polled by Reuters expected an average of 335,000 initial jobless claims and their estimates ranged from 311,000 to 350,000.

The figure for the week to September 18 has not been revised from that released last Thursday.

The four-week moving average is also up to 340,000 against 335,750 the previous week.

The number of people receiving regular benefits, however, fell to 2.802 million during the week to September 18 (the last for which these figures are available) against 2.820 million a week earlier.
