USA, Trump has control of the Senate, but the counting for the House is not yet concluded

Donald Trump achieved a clear victory in the United States presidential elections, winning all the swing states and obtaining a majority in the Senate, but uncertainty now concerns which party will have the majority in the House of Representatives in the next legislature. Last Tuesday, Americans voted not only to elect the president, but also to renew all 435 seats in the House and 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate. The counts are still ongoing, and the final result for the House will take a few days to be confirmed.

Trump towards total control of Congress?

With the presidency and the majority in the Senate already in hand, Trump now aims to conquer the House as well to avoid what in jargon is called the “lame duck” effect, i.e. the different political coloring of the presidency and Congress ( even just one of its branches).
Having a majority in the House would also allow Trump to consolidate control over Congress, guaranteeing him wide margins for political action. With both houses on his side, the president could implement his agenda without having to negotiate with the opposition. For Democrats, however, winning the House represents their last chance to maintain a counterweight to the presidency.

The current situation

Currently, the Republicans have the advantage but the challenge remains open. The counts are progressing slowly, especially in states like California, and it will take days to know the final outcome. Of the House’s 435 total seats, 218 are needed to obtain a majority. Currently, it is estimated that Trump’s Republican Party will win 211 seats, remaining seven away from the 218 needed for a majority. The Democrats, on the other hand, are expected to obtain 199 seats. There are still 25 seats to be assigned, and the counting continues in the last contests in the remaining states.
