On the occasion of the Statue of Liberty’s birthday, our author wrote a declaration of love to a city. Because New York can do what some men never can. And it’s better there than in Berlin.

Dhe Statue of Liberty is celebrating its 130th birthday. And besides her iconic importance, she is that Landmark of a city that I consider the best in the world. A city that is the only one in the world that allows this conclusion: The great love of your life does not have to be a man. It can also consist of skyscrapers.

We learned this wisdom from the series “Sex and the City”, especially in the episode “Anchors Away”, in which a sailor dares to criticize Carrie for New York. Too loud, too big, the usual stupid stuff.

She then leaves him, of course, because: “If you only find one great love in life, then it may well be that my name is New York,” says Carrie. And: “The city is my date. For about 18 years . Something serious is developing. I think I’m in love.”

“Sex and the City” lives on in hearts

The last episode “Sex and the City” aired ten years ago. “Welt” reporter Nicola Erdmann asked around: What do Germans think of the wisdom from the series today?

Me too. Since 2002, when I was there for the first time. I come back at least once a year, have already celebrated Christmas and birthdays there. I can’t decide when I love New York more. In the winter, when everything is kitschy and you realize that all those Christmas New York movies didn’t lie – or in the summer, when you can spend days and nights outdoors, in parks or on rooftops with the world’s best scenery. When you can lie on the grass between disused train tracks, watch the sunset, eat ice cream sandwiches and put your feet in the water (High Line Park!).

And at the same time, in two steps you are back in the middle of everything. You can hop on the subway, get off anywhere and be sure that you will see, hear, experience something new. New York has at least as many faces as Berlin, which some say is similar to New York. Unlike Berlin, however, New York’s faces are friendly, the garbage in bins instead of on the grass, and the people are tolerant enough not to yell at you if you cross the street on red (as they actually do in oh-so-free Berlin ).

New York is the only city where I would – without hesitation – vacation on my own. For weeks if possible. New York can tell stories, entertain me, amuse me and make my stomach tingle – unlike so many men. It’s serious.

Nicola Erdmann is going back to New York in November, she was there for the last time in September.
