Until now, abortions were allowed up to about 20 weeks in Iowa, a Midwestern US state that Donald Trump won in 2020.
“Patients are going to have to travel hundreds of miles if they can afford it” to get to states where abortion is still allowed, said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion rights group.
Iowa law provides exceptions in cases of rape, incest, danger to the mother’s life and abnormalities in fetal development.
