Ryan Routh, 58, who is accused of trying to shoot Donald Trump in Florida, pleaded not guilty today to all charges, including the attempted assassination of the Republican presidential candidate.
“We plead not guilty” to all five charges, defense attorney Christy Militello said during a brief hearing in federal court in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Ruth answered in the affirmative when asked by the judge if he is aware of the charges against him. He was arrested on September 15 while trying to escape after Secret Service agents saw him hiding behind a bush holding a semi-automatic rifle near Trump’s golf course.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, Ryan Routh is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm due to his criminal record, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, possession of a firearm with intent to commit a violent crime, and assault on a federal agent.
According to the FBI, which analyzed the data of his telephone communications, Ruth had been in Florida since August 18, with his cell phone being traced several times near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf course. Before he was spotted and arrested, he had been at the scene for nearly 12 hours, according to prosecutors, who released a handwritten letter from Ruth expressing — several months earlier — his intention to assassinate Donald Trump.
