Orenthal James Simpson was tried and acquitted of the double murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her lover Ronald Goldman. The couple were stabbed to death outside in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on the night of June 12, 1994. The trial lasted eleven months, beginning on November 9, 1994[1] until October 3, 1995.
Simpson was formally charged with the murders on June 17 after investigators found a blood-stained glove in his possession. After failing to deliver at the agreed time, he became the subject of a low-speed chase in a white 1993 Ford Bronco SUV owned and driven by his friend, Al Cowlings.
The networks interrupted their coverage of the 1994 NBA Finals to broadcast the chase live, which was watched by an estimated 95 million people. Simpson’s pursuit and capture later that day was one of the most publicized events in American history.
The trial was considered historically significant for widely dividing public reaction to the verdict. Observers’ views of the verdict were related to their ethnicity, and the media called this the “racial divide”.
A poll of Los Angeles County residents found that most African-Americans believed his acquittal was correct, while a majority of whites believed it was racially motivated jury nullification by the mostly African-American jury. More recent polls show that this “gap” has narrowed since the trial.
After the trial, Goldman’s father filed a civil suit against Simpson. On February 4, 1997, the panel unanimously found Simpson responsible for both deaths. The Goldman family was awarded damages and compensation totaling $33.5 million ($61.1 million in 2022 dollars).
In 2000, Simpson left California for Florida, one of the few states where personal assets such as homes and pensions cannot be seized to cover liabilities in other states.
