Taking advantage of a golden run in the wake of the leaders, the 5-year-old Colonel Liam imposed himself with authority at the expense of the very solid Never Surprised, also trained by Todd Pletcher, who led the way despite his starting stall the outside. Saddled by Brendan Walsh, Space Traveler finished well in 3rd place under the saddle of the Irishman Jamie Spencer. Gray like his father Liam’s Map, Colonel Liam had been the object of a formidable pinhooking, between his purchase price at $50,000 as a yearling at Keeneland and his resale at $1.2 M during the breeze up at Ocala! A little disappointing at first, after a big claim, it suddenly revealed itself as it passed over the grass. Winner of a Gr.1 on the day of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, he made his comeback after 8 months of absence, having not raced since a failure in June at Belmont Park.
