USA: surprise drop in consumer confidence

While it was supposed to rebound, US consumer confidence deteriorated again in February, shows a survey released Tuesday by the Conference Board.

The confidence index calculated by the employers’ organization fell to 102.9 from 106 last month, while economists expected it to average around 108.

While the component of consumers’ judgment of their current situation improved from 151.1 to 152.8 month-on-month, that measuring their expectations fell to 69.7, from 76 last month. .

Ataman Ozyildirim, director of economic research at the Conference Board, points out that the decline in household confidence has been particularly marked among households made up of people aged 35 to 54 and with annual earnings above $35,000.
