After US sanctions were imposed on representatives of the Russian leadership, the Kremlin warned Washington not to “play with fire”. The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement Tuesday evening accusing the US of an “anti-Russian attack”. The US policy lacks “logic and sense” and will “further damage” bilateral relations, the statement said. Washington justifies the sanctions with the actions of the Russian leadership against the Kremlin critic Alexej Navalny.
The US sanctions list published on Tuesday includes the head of the Russian domestic secret service FSB, Alexander Bortnikow, and close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It was the first time the US has imposed sanctions on Russia since the new President Joe Biden took office. Biden’s government is much tougher in dealing with Moscow than the previous government under President Donald Trump. The EU also announced on Monday sanctions against four members of the Russian government who are involved in the legal prosecution of Navalny and the repression of his supporters.
“The absurdity triumphs,” declared the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Navalny case is only used as an “excuse” to openly interfere in the “internal affairs” of Russia. The ministry announced that Russia would react “on the basis of the principle of reciprocity”. Attempts to impose something on Russia with the help of sanctions or pressure have already come to nothing in the past.
