At least four people have been killed in a shooting at a Georgia high school, CNN reported.
In addition to the four dead, dozens were injured in the shooting at Appalachian High School in Winter, Georgia, the network reported, citing unnamed security sources. Some of the wounded have not been shot but were injured trying to escape, he added.
A suspect has been taken into custodyaccording to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Judd Smith would not confirm the death toll, saying only that there were “many injuries”.
A Barrow School Board spokesman said the situation is now under control and students are being evacuated.
ABC News reported the testimony of a student, Sergio Caldera, who was in the chemistry lab when he heard the shots. The 17-year-old said the teacher opened the door and another teacher ran to tell her to close it because “there’s a gunman”.
While students and teachers were hiding in the hall, someone knocked loudly on the door and shouted several times to open it. When the blows stopped Caldera heard more gunshots and screams. The students later evacuated the classroom and fled to the school’s football field.
Footage broadcast by television station helicopters shows several ambulances outside the school complex.
The FBI sent agents to the school to assist local law enforcement, said a spokeswoman, Jenna Selito.
The White House announced that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the incident and his administration “will continue to coordinate its actions with federal, state and local officials.”
Over the past 20 years, the US has seen hundreds of gun attacks at schools and universities – the worst of which was at Virginia Tech in 2007, where 30 people were killed.
