Parts of the US east coast are currently hit by a strong winter storm. Alerts have been issued in 14 states, affecting more than 60 million people. Pennsylvania has already been hit particularly badly: 80 vehicles crashed into each other on an icy interstate highway. Two people died in the pile-up. 50,000 households are cut off from the electricity supply. Heavy snowfall was forecast for New York. More snow could fall than all of last winter. This threatens traffic chaos in the metropolis of millions, which was already in the spring due to the corona pandemic. Lessons will not be canceled at schools because of the storm, as the students are at home in digital lessons.
Corona and no end
The world continues to be concerned with the Corona issue. Not just in the US, but worldwide. However, the USA is considered a negative example in the media when dealing with the pandemic: since the outbreak of the epidemic, almost 17 million people in the USA have been infected with the corona virus. Is that really a negative global record? In no other country on earth are there as many officially reported cases as in the USA. However, one has to consider that 330 million people live there. Correspondingly, around 5% of the population became infected with the virus. So far, around 16 million people in Europe have been infected with the virus. Not counting the areas of Russia and Turkey belonging to Europe. Around 447 million people live in the EU. According to this, around 3.7% of the population had been infected. You can see that the USA is already ahead of Europe, but the anti-corona strategies in Europe are not so much more successful than in the USA. With regard to Germany, I find it exciting to see whether the “hard” lockdown will now bring the desired success of reducing the incidence to below 50 new infections per week and 100,000 citizens. I fear that we will ultimately find ourselves in a steady partial lockdown until spring. The targeted vaccinations will probably only be able to really develop their social impact next autumn. But at least: a silver lining!
Cyclone approaching Fiji
The Fiji archipelago is threatened by a strong category “5” cyclone. The cyclone called Yasa brings wind speeds of up to 280 km / h with it. In addition, extreme rainfall is to be expected. The landfall is expected on Thursday. The cyclone went from a category “1” storm to a category “5” monster in one day. That shows how heated the Pacific is.
