Seven people, including a 6-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister, were killed when the bus they were traveling in overturned east of Vicksburg, Mississippi, early Saturday morning, Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said.
The two young victims were brothers, according to the medical examiner, who emphasized that several more people were injured, while US media reported “dozens” of injuries.
The crash, which occurred between Vicksburg and Bovina on Interstate 20 around 12:30 a.m. (local time), involved a tour bus carrying 47 people, most of whom were Latino.
The reasons for the overturning of the bus are unknown
The bus was traveling westbound when it suddenly left the highway and overturned. Authorities did not say what caused the bus to go off the roadway.
Six people were pronounced dead at the scene and one person died at Merit Health Hospital in Vicksburg.
Thirty-seven other passengers were taken to local hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson, whose conditions remain “unknown.”
None of the victims have been publicly identified, but the county medical examiner confirmed to CBS News that two of the victims were siblings. The 6-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were both from Guatemala and were identified by their mother. He stated that other passengers on the bus also come from this Central American country.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and investigations into the circumstances under which the fatal bus veered off the road are ongoing by the Mississippi State Highway Patrol and Division of Commercial Transportation Enforcement.
