Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced today that he is withdrawing from his campaign and is supporting Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump.
Earlier, his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, had signaled that she might end her campaign and join former President Trump in order to prevent a victory for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Kennedy Jr.’s campaigning activities have been almost non-existent over the past two months, his poll numbers have dropped, and media reports have reported that the environmental lawyer’s campaign had contacts with the teams of Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris.
The former president said Tuesday that he would “certainly be willing” to consider Kennedy Jr. for a position in his administration if the independent candidate withdrew from the 2024 election race and endorsed him.
“I like him and I respect him… He’s a brilliant guy,” Trump told CNN during a stop in Michigan. He also said he was “very intelligent” and that he had known him “for a long time.”
According to Trump, “I didn’t know that (the candidate) was thinking of withdrawing, but if he is considering withdrawing, I would certainly be open to it,” he stressed.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who ran for president of the United States as a Democrat and then became an independent, is the nephew of assassinated President John F. Kennedy (1963) and son of Robert F. Kennedy, who was running for president in 1968, when he was killed.
By endorsing Trump, Kennedy Jr. is breaking completely with family tradition.
