George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American, died on Monday night in Minneapolis after a violent police intervention, whose images went viral. Floyd was arrested on suspicion of trying to pay with a fake $ 20 bill in a supermarket. In a video shot by passersby and released on social media, it is possible to see one of the agents press Floyd’s neck with his knee for several minutes.

The police claimed that the man resisted arrest, but new images, captured by the cameras of the restaurant in front of which the arrest took place, showed Floyd to be driven to the police vehicle, handcuffed behind his back and offering no resistance.

The four policemen involved have been fired and local and federal authorities are investigating the incident, but there have been no charges yet.

On Thursday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michele Bachelet, condemned the case, calling on the authorities to take “serious steps” to end these deaths of African Americans.

“This was the latest in a long series of deaths by unarmed African-Americans by American police and self-punishment (…). The American authorities must take serious measures to end these deaths and ensure that justice is done when they occur, ”said Michele Bachelet in a statement.
