Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters are expected to gather outside the premises where the Democratic National Convention will be held (from today until Wednesday), in order to protest the position of the Biden administration against Israel and its war in Gaza.
A more than 1,600-mile march organized by the March on the DNC organization is expected to take place in a park outside the stadium where the convention will be held, hours before President Joe Biden addresses the delegates.
Organizers are in negotiations with authorities to extend the march’s route so that all protesters have a chance to participate, said Hatem Abudayeh, a spokesman for the March, which is being held with the support of more than 200 organizations.
Organizers told Reuters last week that many people were expected to come from Palestinian and Arab communities in Illinois and neighboring states. The coalition also includes organizations that champion various causes, including reproductive rights and racial justice.
Abudaye says he expects tens of thousands of protesters at the event at 21:00 Greek time. The organization will guarantee the safety of the mobilization and does not expect that there will be any violent incidents from the demonstrators, while strong police forces and men of the US Secret Service will have been deployed around the perimeter.
The protesters want the police not to infringe on their right to free speech, he said.
“That is their sole responsibility. We don’t need them to keep us safe. We don’t need them to protect us, just not to encroach on our rights,” Abudaye said this morning.
Another large protest rally is planned for Thursday, the day Kamala Harris is expected to accept the anointing.
For months, Palestinian supporters have protested the Biden administration’s military and financial support for Israel during its war against Hamas, which has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza.
“The Democrats are in power,” Abudaye said today. “It’s their war. They are responsible for him, they are accomplices and they can stop him.”
