USA: private jobs created in December twice as high as expected

According to ADP, the new positions take off at 807,000, against 505,000 in November.

The private sector in the United States created almost twice as many jobs as expected in December and a total of more than 6 million jobs in 2021, employers nevertheless facing for months a significant shortage of manpower. work.

In December, 807,000 private jobs were created in the United States, according to the monthly survey of the business services company ADP published on Wednesday, against 505,000 in November according to data revised downwards.

This is nearly double the 425,000 that analysts expected and it is the highest number of private job creations since May.

“The December job market strengthened as the fallout from the Delta variant wore off and Omicron’s impact was not yet showing,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist of ADP, quoted in the press release.

“Job creation has been generalized,” she said. The service sector still largely derives these job creations, with 669,000 jobs created, including 246,000 for the hotel and catering sector alone.

The manufacturing sector created 138,000 jobs, registering for 2021, its highest number of hires.

“While job creation was over 6 million in 2021, the number of private sector jobs is still almost 4 million jobs below pre-Covid-19 levels,” said Nela Richardson, ADP chief economist, cited in press release.

The official employment report for the last month of 2021 will be released on Friday.

Analysts expect twice as many job creations as in November to be announced (440,000 jobs created), and that the unemployment rate will drop 0.1 point to 4.1%.

Employers have been facing serious recruitment difficulties for months, especially for the lowest paid jobs, which has largely led them to offer better wages and conditions.

the number of vacancies remains higher than the number of job seekers. And while the pandemic has changed the aspirations of American workers, a phenomenon dubbed “The Great Resignation” is now in full swing, with employees resigning to find better jobs, and often leaving with a job offer in their pocket.

Thus in November, 4.5 million people resigned, a record, according to data released Tuesday by the Bureau of Statistics (BLS).

Private and public sectors combined, more than 22 million jobs were destroyed in March and April 2020, because of containment measures aimed at halting the progression of Covid-19.
