Washington announced its intention to withdraw from the treaty six months in advance on May 22, citing Russia’s failure to comply with its provisions as the reason.
“On May 22, the United States exercised its right by notifying the treaty depositaries and its parties of their decision. Six months later, the decision entered into force on November 22,” the US State Department said.
President Donald Trump he repeatedly accused Moscow of violating the treaty signed by 34 countries, which entered into force in 2002.
European countries, incl. France, Germany, Belgium and Spain regretted this decision while admitting that they shared Washington’s concern over Russia’s actions.
The Open Skies Treaty is another international treaty from which Trump withdrew the United States. Earlier, he said, among others nuclear deal with Iran i INF system on the ban on medium and short-range nuclear weapons.
