The governor of the US state of New York, which has been particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, has presented a plan for a return to normalcy. “We want to get the economy going again,” said Andrew Cuomo at his daily press conference on Sunday, “but we have to be careful and intelligent about it.”
For example, companies should ensure that distance rules are observed in their offices and factories and that they have enough breathing masks for their employees.
The first companies could open on May 15, said Cuomo – provided the situation continues to improve. At the height of the pandemic, almost 800 people died in New York every day, on Saturday the number of deaths fell below 400. Cuomo fears that this could change again if the lockdown ends too quickly. “If we make a mistake now,” he said, “then we may gamble away all our successes.” First of all, construction workers and factory workers should return to their jobs.
It will be a while before normality actually reigns in New York. Events that attract large numbers of visitors from all over the world should remain prohibited. According to Cuomo, ramping up the economy will be particularly difficult in the densely populated metropolis of New York City. There, the virus had spread much faster than in other cities in the United States. (apa, dpa)
