New weekly claims for unemployment benefits in the United States fell to 1.48 million last week, a number higher than analysts’ expectations, according to figures released Thursday by the Labor Department.
The ministry specifies that this number, established for the week of June 15 to 20, is “in fall” and it is to be compared with a revised number in increase (1,540 against 1,508 initially estimated) for the preceding week.
This number, higher than the expectations of analysts who expected 1.25 million new applications, illustrates the difficult fall in unemployment as the authorities struggle to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since mid-March, when the containment measures began to be implemented, more than 47.2 million new requests for allowances have been recorded.
The situation is very disparate in the United States in terms of health with for example New York which began its deconfinement after having stemmed the new coronavirus while in other states, in particular in Texas, new foci of infections appeared.
