The NATO Secretary-General considered that the events of January 6 in Washington, when supporters of the outgoing US President, Donald Trump, invaded Congress, trying to halt the certification of election results, was “a deadly attack on the Capitol, the heart of democratic institutions in the United States ”.
“This is absolutely unacceptable and I said very clearly from the start that it was scary and that the election results must be respected and that we have to ensure that our democratic values are fully respected,” added Stoltenberg.
The NATO Secretary General reiterated his confidence in the democratic institutions of the United States and said he was looking forward to “a peaceful transition” in order to start working with the next President, Joe Biden.
“I know that Joe Biden is strongly committed to our transatlantic cooperation with NATO, and I know that he also strongly supports the idea of strengthening cooperation between North America and Europe,” concluded Stoltenberg.
On January 6, while Congress was meeting to certify Biden’s electoral victory, a violent mob invaded the Capitol, forcing work to stop for several hours and causing five deaths.
Trump is being held responsible for inciting these supporters to invade the Capitol, which earned him an impeachment process, which was approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, and which will lead to a political trial in the Senate.
