USA: It is not a matter for the UN to recognize a Palestinian state, says Washington – 2024-04-04 19:25:24

The United States believes that a Palestinian state should be created through direct negotiations with Israel and not through the UN, the US State Department announced today.

“That’s something that has to be done through direct negotiations between the parties, that’s what we’re looking at right now, not at the United Nations,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters, without specifying whether the United States would veto in such a sentence.

When asked about the fact that the Palestinians on Tuesday officially began the process to become a full member state of the UN, a process with an uncertain outcome but which they see as necessary in the face of the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.

The American official also underlined that Washington is “actively committed”, despite the war in Gaza, to the establishment of a Palestinian state accompanied by “security guarantees” for Israel.

In a letter obtained by Agence France-Presse, which was addressed to the UN Secretary-General and forwarded to the Security Council, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour announces, “following the request of the Palestinian leaders” that he repeats this request that dates back to 2011 and invites the Council to consider it “in April 2024”.

The Palestinians have had observer status at the UN since 2012, but aspire to become a true UN member state.
