The Revolutionary Guards are on the US list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations
Iranians who served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as part of their mandatory military service will now be allowed to enter the United States, a statement from the US Secretary of Homeland Security and Secretary of State said on Thursday. ‘State.
Following consultations with Attorney General Merrick Garland, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken decided that certain aspects of the Immigration and Nationality Act would no longer apply to people having “provided insignificant or limited material support to a designated terrorist organization”.
A designated terrorist organization is an organization on the US Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) blacklist, such as the Islamic Republic’s Revolutionary Guards.
The entry ban on these individuals will be lifted “provided they are proven not to pose a threat to the safety and security of the United States,” according to the Washington statement.
The move came two days before Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced that talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear pact would soon resume in Vienna.
One of the obstacles to the resumption of talks – stalled for three months – was the designation of the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States, and the lifting of sanctions against the organization.
Last month, however, a US report claimed that President Joe Biden had decided to keep the Revolutionary Guards on his blacklist.
