USA, in trouble for 70 million unvaccinated and more keys to vaccination

US President Joe Biden reiterated his call to the nearly 70 million Americans who have not yet been vaccinated to avoid “a tragedy” in the country in the country and immunize against covid-19.

This and four other news are the keys to the vaccination of the week in America:

THE PANDEMIC OF THE UNVACCINATED IN THE USA

Despite the fact that the US will begin to apply the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to various groups of its population – the elderly, vulnerable and workers at risk – it continues to have difficulties to contain the pandemic since a 25% of its inhabitants are reluctant to be immunized.

Those over 65, adults with diseases such as diabetes or obesity and workers at risk of infection such as those in the health sector, teachers and employees of grocery stores will be the first to access a third dose of the vaccine, although only in the case of having Pfizer, the first to receive approval for the reinforcement.

Although both the president of the country, Joe Biden, as well as his experts stressed that three-quarters of the population with the possibility of being vaccinated has at least one dose, they also recognized the damage of having still 25% of Americans who, being able to get vaccinated, they have not done it.

There are 70 million people, something “totally unacceptable” according to the president, who insisted that this is now only the pandemic of the unvaccinated and warned that he will continue to promote, whenever possible, the requirement to be vaccinated for certain groups, as he did with federal workers or with all military personnel.

POLEMIC IN BRAZIL OVER VACCINATION OF BOLSONARO’S WIFE

Just when it became known that Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, became the third member with a diagnosis of coronavirus who made up the delegation of that country that attended the UN Annual Assembly, the president revealed that his wife got vaccinated in the US

The announcement of Michelle Bolsonaro’s vaccination received a wave of criticism from those who considered that attitude as a “contempt” for the public health of the South American nation.

The outrage was manifested in political circles, especially in a Senate commission that investigates possible irregularities committed by the Government in the face of a pandemic that has killed almost 593,000 Brazilians and is not yet under control.

It is presumed that the vaccine was applied this week, when he was part of the official Brazilian delegation that attended the UN General Assembly and returned without the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, who remained in New York in quarantine, after giving positive for covid-19.

In his speech to the UN, Bolsonaro insisted on his denial of covid-19, defended the use of drugs of doubtful efficacy to treat it and opposed the so-called “health passport.”

COLOMBIA, WITH HALF OF ITS POPULATION VACCINATED

The Colombian Ministry of Health reported that half of the population has at least one dose of some of the covid-19 vaccines.

“There has been a decrease in the rate of vaccination and therefore it is necessary to work together to make an effort among all actors and improve coverage in the territories,” said the Deputy Minister of Social Protection, María Andrea Godoy.

To date, almost 43.5 million doses have been distributed. Of these, 39,057,913 have been applied —13,539,619 are second doses—, so that half of the population has at least one. The percentage drops to 32% when speaking of the population with the complete vaccination scheme, since 16,353,229 have it.

In recent weeks, the country has experienced a problem with the supply and arrival of vaccines from several pharmaceutical companies, including Sinovac and Moderna, which has severely affected the application of second doses.

DOSAGE IN MEXICO FOR MINORS WITH CHRONIC DISEASES

Mexican minors with chronic diseases or other serious health conditions will begin to receive their vaccine against covid-19 in the first week of October.

“We are reviewing what they are doing in other countries and technically reviewing,” said the undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, in charge of managing the pandemic in the country.

Comorbidities to be considered are immunosuppression (cancer, transplants or HIV), severe chronic lung disease, chronic kidney, liver or digestive system involvement, severe neurological disease, diabetes and other endocrine diseases, genetic or chromosomal abnormalities, and adolescent pregnancy.

López-Gatell recalled that they can only be vaccinated with the Pfizer antidote “because it is the only one that has proven to be effective in children.”

MORE VACCINES FROM SPAIN TO PARAGUAY

Spain positioned itself as one of the main vaccine donors to Paraguay with the arrival of 316,800 doses of AstraZeneca, the third delivery of a total of one million, which will begin to be applied from this Monday.

The cargo arrived at the Asunción international airport along with a shipment of 107,000 doses of Sputnik V corresponding to the purchase from the Russian Investment Fund.

For the ambassador of Spain in Paraguay, Carmen Castiella, the new delivery, through the Covax mechanism of the World Health Organization (WHO), is part of “the joint effort of the European Union to contribute to an accessible vaccination and universal”.

“It is an expression of solidarity of Spain with the Paraguayan people and citizenship, and also reflects the will and reliability of Spain when it comes to keeping its word,” said Castiella before referring to the announcement by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez , at the Ibero-American Summit last April, of the donation of 7 million vaccines to Latin America and the Caribbean.
