In June, the 39-year-old got the post of deputy head of the Russian Kherson administration. Now it’s over from Biden “blacklist”.
It is held responsible for engaging in “activities that undermine the peace, security, political stability, or territorial integrity of the United States and its allies,” they write.
In addition to Gubareva, over 40 others with links to Russian authorities were sanctioned today by the United States. Among them is one of the richest people in Russia, Vladimir Potanin.
Gubareva has been the prime foreign minister of the self-proclaimed pro-Russian breakaway republic of Donetsk since 2014, and has sat in parliament ever since. In April 2014, he called Ukraine’s then-government a “junta” and called for a referendum on joining Russia, according to the New York Times.
In late November, Russian state media Tass reported that Gubareva had been arrested and detained in Donetsk on her way to Moscow.
It happened shortly after her husband reported her missing.
The background to the arrest was that she allegedly embezzled large sums of public money, was deposed as deputy leader, and was on her way to the Russian capital to plead her case.
Tass also reported that he was then under investigation. Read more in the case below.
