USA, FN | The president was denied food, but is still allowed into the Most Holy

The Brazilian president stands out in many ways.

NEW YORK (Nettavisen): Brazil’s unvaccinated president Jair Bolsonaro went on a rampage in New York when he arrived in the city on Sunday, in connection with the UN high-level week kicked off on Tuesday.

Requirements: Must be vaccinated

In New York, it is a requirement that everyone must be vaccinated and show proof of it, in order to be allowed into bars and restaurants in the city.

And when Bolsonaro could not present such evidence, he and his delegation were denied a table in New York and ended up having to eat pizza pieces on the street, writes NBC NewYork.

Jair Bolsonaro will both attend and speak in New York. Bolsonaro, who became infected with coronary artery disease last year, believes he is still immune to the virus and has previously made it clear that he will not take the vaccine, writes NTB.

By not being vaccinated, the president is violating city laws, but he will still be allowed into the UN building when he gives a speech on Tuesday.

– Must give a calm speech

Bolsonaro has already announced that he will give a “calm speech, very objective, focusing on the issues that interest us”, when he will give the opening speech on Tuesday.

Among other things, he will discuss Brazil’s approach to the corona pandemic, the country’s agricultural industry and energy.

Authorities in New York announced last week that they will require all participating diplomats and world leaders to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The main hall where the world leaders are to gather is classified as a meeting room, and thus all those present must be vaccinated. The same goes for people who participate in several other activities indoors in the big city.

A few hours later, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he could not impose the requirement on the heads of state. Bolsonaro, who was infected last year, has said, among other things, that he will be “the last Brazilian” to be vaccinated.

“An obviously discriminatory measure”

Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzja is another diplomat who is less enthusiastic about this vaccine requirement. He believes this is “an obviously discriminatory measure”, and that it violates UN guidelines, according to The Washington Post.

Nebenzja’s criticism of the vaccine requirement does not sit well with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

– If the Russian ambassador is against it, then I am for it, he states.

Guterres, who recently gained renewed confidence as UN chief for five new years, has stressed that he can not order heads of state to be vaccinated.

Erna Solberg: – Important for me

Last year, for the first time in UN history, the high-level week had to be held digitally when the 75th General Assembly took place.

This year, things are somewhat back to normal, and most countries’ representatives and diplomats will be physically present in New York, including Norway’s outgoing Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) and Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide (H).

With a few weeks left before Norway gets a new government, this will be Solberg’s last opportunity as Prime Minister to meet face to face with many of his international colleagues.

– During the meetings, it becomes important for me to give strength and direction to the issues I have been particularly interested in, such as the sea and girls’ education. This work continues with force even though I move into a new role, Solberg says to NTB.

Since Norway sits on the UN Security Council, Solberg will also address issues related to peace and disarmament.

– I am worried about a world with clearer contradictions between the great powers. We must all realize that we have to work together on a lot, even if we do not agree on everything, she says.

Someone’s first and others’ last UN week

Solberg says she is looking forward to meeting UN chief António Guterres and other leaders to talk about the way forward to the climate summit in Glasgow in November.

– This will be an important meeting to ensure that important steps are taken forward on the climate. I also want to meet many of those I have worked with on the issues I have been particularly interested in, says Solberg.

– We also plan to meet with other leaders, but as always in the UN, a lot falls into place at the very end, she says.

Biden’s first high-level week as president

This will be US President Joe Biden’s first high-level week as president. On the opening day on Tuesday, he will speak in the main hall. Unlike his predecessor Donald Trump, Biden is a strong supporter of the UN, and diplomats point out that his presence at the meetings will strengthen his message that “the United States is back”.

At the same time, this will be Germany’s Prime Minister Angela Merkel’s last UN week as the country’s leader. She resigns after 16 years as prime minister.
