For the first time since its foundation, in 1988, the Lutheran Evangelical Church in America (Elca) named a person openly transgender to the role of bishop. During a service at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, it was announced that Reverend Megan Rohrer will lead the Sierra Pacific synod, one of 65 in the church, to which some 200 congregations in northern California and northern Nevada respond.
