Usa, first transgender person ordained bishop of the Lutheran Church – Corriere.it

Megan Rohrer, married and with two children, will lead the Sierra Pacific Synod. She became a pastor in 2010

For the first time since its foundation, in 1988, the Lutheran Evangelical Church in America (Elca) named a person openly transgender to the role of bishop. During a service at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, it was announced that Reverend Megan Rohrer will lead the Sierra Pacific synod, one of 65 in the church, to which some 200 congregations in northern California and northern Nevada respond.

The election took place in May after the current bishop announced his retirement and his office will last six years. Rohrer, which uses the gender-neutral pronoun they to refer to herself, married and has two children. She was ordained a pastor in 2011 along with seven other people, the first of the LGBT community to receive this office from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

My hope, if you will allow me, and I think you will, love each other and love what you love, he told the faithful, I accept this role because a diverse community of Lutherans in Northern California and Nevada he voted devotedly and thoughtfully to do something historic. Prior to this, Rohrer had served in San Francisco, where she had distinguished herself as an activist for local homeless and LGBT communities.
