USA: durable goods orders continue to rebound

In June, durable goods orders climbed 7.3% on the back of the auto industry, while analysts were forecasting an advance of 6.4%.

Durable goods orders in the United States surged in June, for the second month in a row after April’s plunge due to COVID-19, rising 7.3%, a rise above expectations, according to released data Monday by the Commerce Department.

Durable goods orders stood at $ 206.9 billion in June, seasonally adjusted.

Analysts were expecting a 6.4% rise.

Growth, as in May, was driven by sales of transportation equipment, whose sales jumped 20% to $ 55.3 billion.

This is due to new car sales which jumped 85.7%.

Aircraft sales, on the other hand, plunged 462.3%. The sector was hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis, and the American manufacturer Boeing was already in turmoil with the setbacks of its 737 Max, devices that have been banned from flying since March 2019.

Defense equipment sales also fell 16.4%.

Durable goods orders rebounded 15.1% in May, according to data revised down slightly, after plunging 18.1% in April, in full containment in an attempt to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.
