President-elect Donald Trump plans to hand over the Department of Agriculture to businesswoman and politician Kelly Leffler, a reporter for the CNN news network reported in a post on the X platform.
Leffler, a staunch Trump supporter, was appointed as Georgia’s senator in 2019, succeeding former senator Johnny Isaacson, who retired from politics. In the 2021 special election, however, he was defeated by Democrat Raphael Warnock.
Leffler was at the time co-owner of the Atlanta Dream women’s basketball team. She came under fire in 2020 when she wrote a letter to the governing body of the women’s professional basketball league (WNBA) opposing her decision to campaign for racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement during the 2020 season.
In the following months, she faced a lot of backlash from female players who disagreed with her stance on social justice issues and called for her departure from team management. Atlanta Dream sold in 2021.
