China wants to tighten controls on three chemicals used to produce the addictive painkiller fentanyl. More than 100,000 people in the US died from illegal fentanyl in 2023. It is mainly manufactured in China.
China has announced plans to control and regulate the production of three chemicals used in the manufacture of illegal fentanyl. The White House made the announcement on Tuesday. In a statement, National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett said that this was the third significant measure of this kind since the USA and China resumed bilateral cooperation on counternarcotics in November 2023. At that time, Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping had discussed the issue at their summit.
