USA, Canada, Jamaica and Costa Rica to the Women’s World Cup-2023 and to the semifinals of the W Concacaf Championship

The United States, Canada, Jamaica and Costa Rica qualified for the Women’s World Cup New Zealand/Australia-2023 after the closing of the group stage of the Concacaf W Championship-2022, which will continue with the semifinal round and the dispute for the passes to Games Olympic-2024 and Gold Cup-2024.

On Monday in the third day of Group A, the United States was the leader with a perfect pace with nine points after beating Mexico 1-0, which ended up eliminated with no units and no goals in favor. Kristie Mewis (minute 89) scored the only goal of the game.

“Unfortunately we were not able to capture team play in the tournament. Personally, I take responsibility,” lamented Mónica Vergara, coach of Mexico, in the post-match conference. “The players are going to have a strong duel. If we want to compete on these stages, we must work in a different way.”

In the other game in the sector, Jamaica beat Haiti 4-0 with goals from Trudi Carter (26), Khadija Shaw (58, 70) and Drew Spence (79). With this victory, the ‘Reggae Girlz’ took second place with six points and secured their place in the World Cup.

Losing, the ‘Grenadiers’ fell to third place with three units and now they will seek to reach New Zealand/Australia-2023 through the intercontinental playoff.

At the end of Group B, Canada also closed perfectly with nine points by winning, with goals from Jessie Fleming (5) and Sophie Schmidt (69), 2-0 to Costa Rica, which finished second with six points.

In a match in which the pass to the intercontinental playoff was at stake, Panama obtained it by beating Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 with a goal by Marta Cox (43).

“Although it is true that we have not yet reached the objective, I think that having this second opportunity to achieve the objective is what we rescue the most,” said Mexican Ignacio Quintana, technical director of Panama. “These heavy blows we received, especially in the first game (3-0 loss to Costa Rica), served to bring the group closer together.”

In this way, the semifinals will be played on Thursday under the following pairings: United States-Costa Rica and Canada-Jamaica.

The tournament champion will qualify directly for the Paris-2024 Olympic Games and the 2024 Gold Cup.

The runner-up and the third place will play a playoff for the second pass to the Olympic Games.
