Tensions ran high at Anthony Blinken’s final press conference as US secretary of state today, after he came under fire from journalists who have been critical of US diplomacy in the Gaza war. He was repeatedly interrupted as he tried to defend his handling of the crisis, which began 15 months ago with an unprecedented attack by Hamas and subsequent Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.
“Criminal! Your place is in The Hague,” freelance journalist Sam Husseini shouted at him, suggesting that Blinken should be held accountable before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Security personnel escorted Husseini out of the State Department press room.
“Why did you keep sending bombs (including Israel) when we had the deal in May?” shouted Max Blumenthal – founder of the website “The Grayzone” who has repeatedly criticized US foreign policy on several issues – before he too was forced to leave the room.

Anthony Blinken has faced criticism for providing arms and diplomatic support to Israel since the Gaza war broke out, triggered by a bloody attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023 that left 1,200 dead and 251 hostages. Since then, Israeli military operations in the enclave have killed more than 46,000 Palestinian people, according to the Hamas Health Ministry.
Every other journalist in the room watched and did nothing. America the free world!

Protesters had camped for months outside Blinken’s home in Virginia and often threw red paint on cars carrying the US secretary of state or members of his family.
