USA and Greece win the United Cup

Led by 19th World Cup Frances Tiafoe, the United States won against the Czech Republic (4-1) during the second day of the United Cup, a new event between mixed teams, this Friday in Sydney.

In the lead after the first two singles of the day before (2-0), the American Jessica Pegula stumbled against the world number 16 Petra Kvitova (7-6 [8/6], 6-4) thus leaving the Czechs a hope of returning to this game. But Tomas Machac’s withdrawal due to injury in the second set against Frances Tiafoe sealed the American victory, brought up 4-1 after the mixed doubles match between Pegula-Fritz against Bouzkova-Lehecka.

Greece wins, Australia loses

For their part, the Greeks, who led 2-0 on Thursday, also beat the Bulgarians thanks to the success of Maria Sakkari who easily beat the 90th World Cup Viktoriya Tomova (6-3, 6-2), as well as the double mixed composed of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Despina Papamichail who won against Gergana Topalova and Adrian Andreev (6-4, 6-4). For his part, Michail Pervolarakis was dominated by the Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov (6-1, 6-1).

Weighed down by Nick Kyrgios’ last minute package, Australia lost to Great Britain (3-2). Leading 2-0 on matchday one, the locals were unable to get back into the game despite Jason Kubler’s victories over Daniel Evans (6-3, 7-6 [7/3]) and the couple Sam Stosur and John Peers against Harriet Dart and Jonny O’Mara (7-6 [7/4], 6-4). Britain’s Harriet Dart took home the winning point just hours earlier.
