By way of comparison, the consensus expected an average of 430,000 job creations.
The figure for August was nevertheless revised downwards, to 340,000 instead of 374,000 announced a month ago, said ADP, a specialist in human resources, personnel management and payroll.
His statistic is released two days before the release of official figures for job creation in the United States, which will be released Friday by the Department of Labor.
According to the consensus, economists expect an average of 500,000 job creations in September.
