In his speech at the general debate of the UN General Assembly on Saturday in New York, Lavrov denounced that the US government is picking all participants at its planned democracy summit itself. In doing so, they take out the right to decide on the democratic status of other countries. “Essentially, this initiative is clearly in the spirit of a Cold War as it calls for a new ideological crusade against all those who think differently.” This contradicts the words of Biden in his speech on Tuesday that he does not want to see the world divided into two blocks again.
The 76th UN general debate continues until Monday – most of the speakers have made their appearance. After only pre-recorded video speeches were played last year due to the pandemic, many heads of state and government traveled to New York again this year, albeit with significantly smaller delegations.
