“The recent progress of the Taliban is even more significant and is the result of an intensive military campaign; more than 50 of Afghanistan’s 370 districts have fallen since early May,” Lyons told UN Security Council .
“Most of the districts have been taken around the provincial capital, indicating that the Taliban are positioning themselves to try and take this capital once foreign forces are completely withdrawn,” Lyons said. CNN, Wednesday (23/6/2021).
The news came as a local power company told media Tuesday that violent clashes had damaged key power infrastructure, causing power outages in 11 provinces including Kabul.
Over the past 24 hours, Taliban fighters have seized control of several districts in Kunduz province and a key border with Tajikistan, according to Rabani Rabani, a member of the Kunduz provincial council.
“The district includes Chahar Dara, Khan Abad, Imam Sahib, and also Shirkhan Bandar, the crossroads with Tajikistan,” Rabani said.
“One of them, Chahar Dara district, fell without a fight to prevent civilian casualties,” Rabani added.
The Taliban’s latest gains are in areas not traditionally under their control.
