US will pay dearly for supporting independent Taiwan

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Ministry of Foreign Affairs China warned United States of America will accept very severe consequences because of Washington’s support for the intention Taiwan to be independent.

In an interview with a Chinese television station CCTV and news agency XinhuaOn Thursday (30/12), Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that US intervention could lead to a dangerous situation.

“The US broke the promise made when China and the US established diplomatic relations, confirmed and supported the ‘Taiwan independence’ forces, while also trying to distort and undermine the one-China principle,” Wang was quoted as saying. AFP.

“This has not only brought Taiwan into a very dangerous situation, it has also caused the US to pay an unimaginably high price,” he added.

Previously, the US invited Taiwan to the Democracy Summit, which infuriated China.

The US does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan because it has official relations with China.

However, under the Taiwan Relations Act, the US has the responsibility and commitment to help protect Taiwan from all forms of aggression, including if China decides to invade.

Meanwhile, Beijing views any formal declaration pointing to Taiwan’s independence as a form of provocation. China even threatens and pressures countries that support and establish official relations with Taiwan.

China claims Taiwan as part of its own country, and vows to seek unification with Taiwan by force if necessary.

In recent months, the Chinese military has acted aggressively and has frequently deployed their planes and ships to cross the Taiwanese border. They also had time to conduct military exercises around Taiwan.

China has also continued to seek to isolate Taiwan from the international community in recent years. This can be seen when Nicaragua decided to change its diplomatic support from Taiwan to China recently.

On the other hand, tensions between China and the US are also increasing. Apart from US support for Taiwan, the issue of the Uighur ethnicity in Xinjiang, as well as trade and technology competition, has made relations between the two countries even more tangled.
