WASHINGTON – US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said President Joe Biden had no intention of deploying troops to Ukraine for combat operations.

However, Austin says every possible military option other than direct deployment, is on the table.

Although negotiations stalled, with the US refusing to back down by insisting that Ukraine be allowed to join the NATO alliance, Austin told reporters Friday that “conflict is not inevitable” with Russia.

Russian troops remain stationed near its own western border, but amid talk of a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine, Austin acknowledged the US does not know whether Russian President Vladimir Putin “has made the final decision to use these troops against Ukraine.”
