US warns London against ‘unilateral’ acts in Northern Ireland

US State Department counselor Derek Chollet today urged the UK to rule out “unilateral” acts in Northern Irelandafter the British Government has advanced that it is preparing a law to revoke part of the Brexit agreements that regulate the status of the region.

“We want to see this matter resolved, we want to see the temperature drop and not see unilateral acts”Chollet told the BBC on the same day a US congressional delegation landed in Brussels to address issues of the Northern Ireland Protocol, before visiting the UK and Ireland in the coming days.

United States President Joe Biden with irish rootshas expressed on several occasions its special interest in preserving the peace agreements in the region.

Chollet stressed today that an escalation of tension between the United Kingdom and the European Union threatens to weaken the unity of the West when the Russian invasion of Ukraine is still underway.

“It’s particularly important right now to send a message of unity to the world and not undermine all the things we’ve worked on so successfully together over the past few months,” said Senior Adviser to the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has been “deeply concerned” this week at the prospect of London preparing to “unilaterally abolish” the Protocol for Northern Irelanda key part of the Brexit agreements.
