Temporary Protection Status (TPS) applies to people whose visa has expired and are forced to return to their homeland devastated by armed conflict or natural disasters. This protection applies to people already in the United States.
“Russia’s deliberate and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has led to ongoing war, senseless violence and forced Ukrainians to seek refuge in other countries,” Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorcas said.
He also noted that about 75,000 people are eligible to apply for temporary protection status on behalf of Ukraine, more than double previous estimates of the number of people.
To be eligible for this protection, individuals must have resided permanently in the United States since March 1, and the temporary protection status will be valid for 18 months.
The Migration Policy Institute previously predicted that about 30,000 Ukrainians with visas could benefit from this protected status.
Visas are issued on a temporary basis, and extending the temporary protection status for Ukrainians with visas will protect them from deportation when those visas expire.
