US vetoes Palestinian request for full UN membership – 2024-04-19 01:43:25

During the vote in the Security Council, the United States vetoed Palestine’s request to be a full member of the United Nations (UN) on April 18, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

Palestine has had observer status in the world body since 2012.
In early April, in the midst of the war in Gaza, Palestine sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, asking for fresh consideration of its membership application, which was first submitted on September 23, 2011.
The United States has historically opposed Palestine’s push for UN membership, saying that should only be recognized as a state and join the world body after concluding a negotiated peace deal with Israel.
The US position frustrated Palestine’s request despite a clear majority that was in favor; of the 15 members who make up the Security Council, 12 voted in favor and two, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, abstained.
For his part, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasili Nebenzia, said that the US veto is a “useless attempt” to stop the course of history.
