US Veto of UN Gaza Ceasefire Proposal Sparks Controversy

The United States vetoed a UN proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Friday. Because the Americans have the right to veto, the resolution was rejected.

UN chief António Guterres urged the Security Council this week for a ceasefire on humanitarian grounds. The Palestinian population could therefore receive help.

Thirteen countries were in favor of the proposal, the United Kingdom abstained and the United States vetoed it.

According to US UN Ambassador Robert Wood, the US does not support the resolution because the ceasefire “will only sow the seeds for the next war”.

Human Rights Watch’s UN representative, Louis Charbonneau, responds X that the US risks being complicit in war crimes by continuing to provide Israel with weapons and “diplomatic cover” while the country commits “atrocities” in Gaza.
