The US State Department has urged relatives of embassy staff in the Nigerian capital Abuja to leave the city. Non-essential diplomatic personnel also have to leave due to “an increased risk of terrorist attacks”.
The ministry does not clarify exactly what the threat is, but says that “terrorist attacks could take place in shopping malls, markets, hotels, restaurants, bars and schools”.
Last weekend, the American authorities already asked the citizens of the West African country to be more vigilant. The warning was adopted by Great Britain, Australia and Canada. The Netherlands also warns that there is “a risk of acts of terrorism in one part of the country”.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry defines the security situation in Nigeria as “vulnerable”. An orange travel tip applies to Abuja. This means that only necessary trips are allowed.
