The US State Department issued an appeal to the Georgian authorities to respect freedom of peaceful assembly and warned both sides against escalation and violence during the protests.
He said that Washington was concerned about the bills on “foreign agents” being considered by the Georgian parliament, and called for the rule of law to be respected during the protests.
“We call on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid any escalation or violent actions, respect the rule of law and democratic values of Georgia,” the US Foreign Office spokesman said.
Price stressed that the implementation of the bills on “foreign agents” could silence the independent voices of the citizens of Georgia, which would threaten the country’s Euro-Atlantic future and its relations with strategic partners.
