US University settles gynecologist’s major abuse case for $ 1 billion | NOW

A university in California buys off victims of an abuse case for a total of more than 1.1 billion dollars (930 million euros), American media write Thursday. Gynecologist George Tyndall, 74, was arrested in July 2019 on suspicion of sexually assaulting women during medical examinations.

The record amount came out on Thursday during a court hearing in Los Angeles. The University of Southern California (USC) previously allocated 215 million dollars (182 million euros) to compensate large numbers of former patients and then acknowledged that signals had not been properly addressed.

Since then, about 700 women have joined forces. Their claim has been settled with the university for $ 852 million, their attorney reported Los Angeles Times. In addition, deals have been concluded on about fifty other cases.

Tyndall has been accused of sexual abuse by hundreds of women. He has treated 17,000 women over the years and is said to have inappropriately touched patients, took pictures of their genitals, and made suggestive comments about their bodies.

The gynecologist has declared himself innocent in dozens of cases. His trial is yet to come.
