WASHINGTON – The United States (US) is not in a position to supply Ukraine with tactical ballistic missiles in quantities that could help turn things around in its counter strike.

The Financial Times (FT) reported that it cited several experts who questioned whether this type of weaponry could help Kiev achieve a major breakthrough.

In its article on Sunday (20/8/2023), the FT, citing unnamed American officials, claimed the US was not producing enough tactical ballistic missiles, which Ukraine had demanded, to “make a significant difference on the battlefield.”

In addition, according to the FT report, another consideration that prevented the delivery of the projectiles was that such actions could lead to a further escalation of the conflict with Russia.

Samuel Charap, senior political scientist at the Rand Corporation, told the media that Ukraine’s push to use long-range missiles was misplaced.

The expert stressed that such rockets are “not a magic wand” and are unlikely to break through the minefields and Russian defenses that Ukrainian forces currently face.

The FT cited several US officials as warning that the level of US military assistance could shrink ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

“The possible re-election of Republican Donald Trump adds another layer of uncertainty, given his repeated promises to end conflict as soon as he takes office,” the report said.
