WASHINGTON, KOMPAS.TV – President of the United States (US) Joe Biden condemned the attempt to “hijack” the Ryanair plane by Belarus in order to arrest pro-opposition activist and journalist, Roman Protasevich.
“This embarrassing incident and the video Protasevich being detained constitutes a shameful offense of differing political views and freedom of the press,” Biden was quoted as saying AFP, Monday (24/5).
Biden refers to one of the videos shown by Belarusian television stations.
In the video, Protasevich pleads guilty to charges of instigating mass riots.
Biden supports the European Union which is rumored to be imposing economic sanctions on Belarus.
“I support the news that the European Union is planning to impose economic sanctions and other measures. I have also asked my team to look for viable options to hold those responsible accountable,” Biden said.
