President Trump has ordered the withdrawal of most of US troops from Somalia early next year. Recently he also decided to take out soldiers Afghanistan and Iraq home. With the withdrawal of American soldiers, he is fulfilling a 2016 election promise.
There are about 700 US military personnel in Somalia. They help the Somali army fight al-Shabaab, an Islamic terrorist organization affiliated with al-Qaeda.
According to the Pentagon, the withdrawal does not mean America will stop fighting terrorism in the area. Some of the Americans in Somalia are moved to surrounding countries so that they can be deployed quickly if necessary. A small number of troops remain stationed in the capital Mogadishu.
